GEAR UP Students Visit the Burke!

This week the Burke hosted a group of twenty GEAR UP students from the UW Summer Institute. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a week-long college immersion experience that prepares high school students to be successful in high school and feel equipped for the next step: college. Students participate in seminars taught by UW faculty, college and career-planning activities, mentoring from undergraduates, college residential life and enrichment activities like visiting the Burke.

While at the Burke, students visited the new International Conservation Photography Awards exhibit where they used the images on display to build a deeper comprehension of the word “conservation.” Their next challenge was to pick a different word to define and use photography as the medium. Students learned about the elements of award winning photography from the ICP Awards images before venturing out to capture their own pictures.

Below you will find the photographs selected by the Burke Education team as the best representative for each group’s word.
